Charmed Reboot To Be A Standalone Show

Last week, fans of the hit drama Charmed were stunned to learn that The CW had plans to revive the magical series. At a recent Television Critics Association press tour, Mark Pedowitz shared some new details about the Charmed revival that has fans buzzing in different directions. The president said that the reboot is a "self-contained, self-sustained show. There is the power of three element in there, but at this time, it is a very standalone show."

Right now, the standalone series is set about four decades before the first Charmed show was. The sort-of prequel will follow three witches who are asked to fight against dark forces in a New England town. With a setting in the 1970s, the retro-styled show will contrast from Charmed in a few big ways. Rather than sisters, the new stars are said to be strangers who are forced together, but the gang of witches will likely be able to use the Power of Three which the Halliwell sisters could tap into.

As for whether any original Charmed stars will appear on the show, Pedowitz is not ruling out the possibility. The president told the press, "We'll see what happens as the series goes on." Since the show did introduce the concept of time travel during its hey-day, the sisterly witches could find a way to travel back to the prequel's setting thanks to their powerful magic.

However, it seems like the Charmed stars themselves may need a bit of convincing. Actresses like Rose McGowan and Holly Marie Combs responded to the news last week, and it left fans wondering if there was any bad blood between the two projects.

When it comes to reviving Charmed, The CW is giving the show all it has. The network is sourcing from its own pool of talent to bring the franchise back to life. The team behind Jane the Virgin will back the series as Jennie Snyder Urman, Ben Silverman, Jessica O'Toole, and Amy Rardin will be part of the revival. The pilot's director will be Brad Silberling, and CBS TV Studios will provide assistance.
