Later this year, Marvel Studios will finally roll out its much-awaited sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy. The superhero space romp will see Chris Pratt reprise his role as Star-Lord, and the character will join his vagabond crew as they save the universe from annihilation one more time. In the movie, a few new characters will also make their debut, and one of them has a rather big connection to Star-Lord. Now, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is talking about the two men and hinting their relationship is a fragile one.
Over at USA Today, James Gunn spoke about the upcoming sequel and said it will focus heavily on Star-Lord's relationship with his father, Ego the Living Planet. "It runs the gamut of emotions for him, wanting to understand why his father wasn't around to quickly idolizing him and ultimately learning the reality of the relationship and comparing the man who sired him to the man who raised him."
The director also said the film will be one that explores the team and its own complex inner-workings. "To let somebody love you is a very difficult thing, especially when you're damaged goods," Gunn explained. "And all of the Guardians are damaged goods."
This is not the first time that someone from the Guardians crew has spoke up about Star-Lord and his heritage. Last year, Pratt spoke to Empire about his character's parentage and said Star-Lord is going to struggle with the new family dynamic presented in the movie.
"You're going to see these characters having to endure the realities of being in a family," he said. "You're talking about a guy who's been longing to know who his father is for a long time. He'll discover if that person lives up to the expectations he has in his head."
Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
