Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been a box office behemoth, and led the UK box office for 2016 despite only two and a half weeks in theaters to track. The film is being honored with two nominations in the Bafta film awards, in expected technical categories. There were very few nominations for genre films in general, and that puts Rogue One up against an eclectic group of nominees.

In Make-up and Hair, Rogue One is nominated, going up against Nocturnal Animals, Hacksaw Ridge, Florence Foster Jenkins, and fellow genre title (and sister studio produciton) Doctor Strange. In Special Visual Effects, however, it's a much more expected company: Rogue One, The Jungle Book, and Doctor Strange represent three facets of the Walt Disney Company, with WB's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Arrival from Paramount rounding out the group.
In fact, Arrival was the leader by far in genre nominations, picking up nine total. The film was also nominated for Best Film, Best Director - Denis Villleneuve, Leading Actress - Amy Adams, Adapted Screenplay - Eric Heisserer, Original Music - Johann Johannsson, Cinematography - Bradford Young, Editing - Joe Walker, and Sound.
In the 2016 Bafta nominations, Star Wars: The Force Awakens came away with four, for Special Visual Effects, Sound, Music, and Production Design. The Force Awakens won for Special Visual Effects.
The Bafta Awards are being held February 12, 2017 at London's Royal Albert Hall.

is in theaters now. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
