Genre is well-represented as Anya Taylor-Joy was also nominated (star of Witch and Morgan), with Lucas Hedges and Spanish actress Laia Costa rounding out the list.

Tom Holland made his debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, representing the first time the character appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to a landmark rights-sharing deal between rival studios Marvel and Sony. He reprises the role in July 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. He currently has two other films scheduled for 2017, as he's currently filming The Current War and Pilgrimage is in post-production, and he continues to balance a mixture of period pieces, dramas, and his new superhero career.

Ruth Negga, meanwhile, has the hit AMC series Preacher going into a second season, and also appeared in Loving in theaters in 2016. The actress has worked steadily since 2004, but is on the verge of a breakout point in her career as she continues to explore multiple angles.

2016's Rising Star Award went ot John Boyega, one of the stars of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, who beat out Taron Egerton (Kingsman), Dakota Johnson, Brie Larson (soon joining the MCU as Captain Marvel), and Bel Powley.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is in post-production for a July 7, 2017 release. Preacher returns to AMC in 2017.
