Lionsgate is moving forward with it's Tupac Shakur biography All Eyez On Me, and the film has just received an official release date.

The upcoming film about the hip-hop great's career and controversy surrounding his death will be heading to theaters on June 16, 2017 (via Variety). That might seem rather soon, but the film is actually already complete from a filming perspective. It was filmed last year in Atlanta and was originally being handled by Open Road Films. After it was complete Lionsgate came on board to distribute instead.

The film will show Tupac's rise to fame and his infamous stint in jail. It was during this time where he ultimately made a deal with the always controversial Suge Knight to sign with his rising Death Row Records in return for getting him out of jail. After unbelievable success with the company, some suspect that Tupac was angling to get out of his contract with Death Row and start his own label. That seemed to stir up animosity between Tupac and Suge, but Suge has always maintained that he knew nothing and was not involved in any way in the murder of the hip-hop luminary.

All Eyez On Me is directed by Benny Boom with Jeremy N. Haft, Eddie Gonzalez and Steven Bagatourian writing the screenplay. The film stars Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Tupac Shakur, Danai Gurira as Afeni Shakur, Jada Pinkett as Kat Graham, Annie Ilonzeh as Kidada Jones, Dominic L. Santana as Suge Knight, Jamal Woolard as Biggie Smalls, Keith Robinson as Atron, John West Jr. as Treach, Lauren Cohan as Leila Steinberg, Cory Hardrict as Hatian Jack, Grace Gibson as Faith Evans, Brandon Sauve as Ted Field, Josh Ventura as Tom Whalley, Azad Arnaud as Daz, Harold House Moore as Dr. Dre, and Khadija Copeland as Queen Latifah.
