In the world of superheroes, it is rare to find rated-R films. Jewels like Blade carried the seldom seen sphere until Deadpool burst onto the scene last summer. The mouthy merc left fans in both awe and tears, leaving Hollywood scrambling to replicated its raunchy success. While Logan has no plans to mimic the other film's crudeness, the X-Men flick does plan to embrace the grittier aspect of superhero films. And, thankfully, 20th Century Fox was much more supportive of the dark tone because of Deadpool.
UP NEXT: New LOGAN Trailer Released
Speaking to Fandango, James Mangold talked about Logan following the release of a new trailer, and the director was asked about Logan's violent content. Specifically, Mangold was questioned on whether Deadpool factored into the change, and here's what the director had to say:
"I was already writing this movie before Deadpool came out, but I will say that what Deadpool did is it made the studio feel a lot better about taking the risk I was asking them to take. They saw there was a marketplace reward for being different."
As for what that means, fans can expect to see lots of blood and hear plenty of swears when Logan hits theaters. Mangold said that the final Wolverine film will give fans what they've asked for: an adult superhero flick.
"Ya know, I can't please everybody because there are so many aspirations people want for these movies. But I think the one that I share and that is universal is the desire to see the intensity, the darkness and the adult nature of the Wolverine character," Mangold explained.
"Much of the Marvel library is full of adult characters with adult themes that don't always get to be explored because they're making four-box movies for children as well. I think we're making it very clear that we're making a grown-up movie."
Logan takes place in the year 2024, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.
Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.
