It only took a mere moment or two before actor Joel McHale got political in his opening monologue while hosting this year's People's Choice Awards. As he began his monologue, McHale not only seemingly got jabs in at both of the candidates in this year's election, he made a Marvel Cinematic Universe reference in one fell swoop.

McHale didn't stick with politics too long but as the annual awards show was held just days before the inauguration of Donald Trump as this country's 45th President, he did speak up on the current events.

"2016 was a very interesting year. We all watched as a longtime government insider squared off against an egotistical billionaire," McHale joked. "I'm speaking, of course, about Captain America: Civil War."

In his analogy, one would guess that the longtime government insider, Steve Rogers/Captain America, was Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton while then-President elect Donald Trump served the role as Tony Stark/Iron Man.

As actor Robert Downey Jr., who plays Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, took the stage later in the show to accept his award for Favorite Action Movie Actor, he didn't directly mention McHale's comments, but did speak up.

"Power to the people," Downey Jr. said. "Stick it to the man!

While Downey came away with the Favorite Action Movie Actor, he wasn't the only superhero walking away with some hardware. Ryan Reynolds won the top actor spot while Jennifer Lawrence finished as the favorite overall actress as they played Deadpool and Mystique, respectively. Actress Margot Robbie was Downey's counterpart for the night as she came away as Favorite Action Movie Actress for her role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad while Deadpool was the lone superhero movie to win an award as the project took home the Favorite Action Movie award.
