Shazam and Black Adam have been the talk of the DC town over the last couple of weeks, and rumors are starting to swirl around possible directors for the films.
There's one name that keeps coming up in relation to the Shazam movie, and fans are fairly divided on how they feel about the possibility.
Brad Peyton - director of San Andreas - has worked with The Rock on multiple projects. The two are currently set to film Rampage, which - along with San Andreas - is being produced by Shazam producers Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn. Just after Geoff Johns met with The Rock and his producers about the future of DC films, he followed Peyton on Twitter.
While the follow doesn't mean much, Johns' account has been accurate in the past when gauging a new person's involvement with DC.
Peyton hasn't been confirmed for the Shazam movie, but he could be the perfect man for the job.
He's worked with The Rock on several projects, and the two have an incredible rapport. If he's someone who understands that The Rock should have a say in the creative process, that's a bonus for fans. With Rock being so involved with the DC future, his films will need a director who allows him to collaborate.
Some might point to San Andreas and say it wasn't the best movie in the world, and criticize Peyton for that. Here's the thing - that film was a perfect audition for Shazam or Black Adam.
Sure, the film could have done more in terms of plot or character development, but it certainly wasn't lacking in those areas. It kept fans engaged for the entire movie, and was a steady stream of fun action sequences.
The other thing that movie did was make a ton of money. Peyton took an expensive budget, and created a box office powerhouse that critics respected.
DC needs that kind of talent in the director's chair. James Wan has made critical darlings that slay at the box office - and he was handed the Aquaman franchise.
With fans complaining about the dark and jumbled tone of the DC universe, someone with a knack for light-hearted fun is exactly what the studio needs. Peyton can take the Shazam movie, and - along with The Rock - inject the good times everyone has been asking for.
To be honest, the guy is a perfect fit for a film like this.
Before you judge Brad Peyton for his previous work, look at all the great things that exact work has done. We would be lucky to see Peyton bring Shazam or Black Adam to life.
