Hundreds of comic book characters are being portrayed in film and television, and with each new day more are being announced.

Major Issues -- a ComicBook.com original video series -- will speak to true comic book hobbyists as well as new fans in a short, fast-paced digital series featuring the first appearances of characters we all love. Each episode will feature the actual comic book, info on the creators, and the backstory on the creation and legacy of the character.

The next in our series is our look at the introduction of, perhaps, the most powerful Marvel character, Ms. Marvel.

The origin of this heroine and her background story is described by the Marvel database: Carol Danvers entered the Air Force upon graduating from high school to pursue her love of aircrafts and her dreams of flying. Carol was a top student at the Air Force Academy and enjoyed a rapid career advancement rising to the rank of Major. Because of her stellar performance, superb combat skills and natural intellect, Carol was recruited into the intelligence field. She ended up serving with the C.I.A., during which time she met and worked with Colonel Nick Fury. She was partnered with Colonel Michael Rossi and the two became lovers. Carol had a distinguished career in the C.I.A.

Originally published as Ms. Marvel No. 1 in 1977, she was created by comic artist team of Gerry and Carol Conway with the help of John Buscema.

Carol Danvers went on to eventually assume other identities, including currently heroing as Captain Marvel. In that identity, she'll make her big screen debut in Avengers: Infinity War, played by Brie Larson, who will then go on to star in her own solo film for Marvel Studios.
