Everything We Know About Pacific Rim 2
Production on Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to 2013's Pacific Rim, is underway in [...]
The Official Title
Pacific Rim 2 was never a sure thing. Sure, the first Pacific Rim it had a vocal fandom, but it was not a giant success in the United States, grossing just over $100 million, which is relatively low for a big blockbuster. However, Pacific Rim topped the international box office, earning an additional $300 million.
The sequel was, at first, simply referred to as Pacific Rim 2. It was later retitled to Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, but that title was later replaced by the official title of Pacific Rim: Uprising.
The Director
Guillermo del Toro, creator and director of the original Pacific Rim, will not be returning for Pacific Rim: Uprising.
The project has fallen into the capable hands of Steven S. DeKnight, the creator of the Spartacus television series. DeKnight wrote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and served as showrunner on the first season of Marvel's Daredevil.
The New Cast
Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega will play the lead role in Pacific Rim: Uprising. Boyega's character is Jake Pentecost, the son of Stacker Pentecost, who was played by Idris Elba in the original Pacific Rim.
Other new cast members include Cailee Spaeny as female lead character Amara, Scott Eastwood as Jaeger pilot Nate Lambert, and Jian Ting as Liwen Shao.
Returning Cast
The leading man of the original Pacific Rim, Charlie Hunnam, will not be returning for Pacific Rim: Uprising, but several members of the supporting cast will.
Rinko Kikuchi will once again play Jaeger pilot Mako Mori. Charlie Day will reprise his role as Dr. Newton Geiszler, a scientist studying Kaiju. Burn Gorman will return to play Geiszler's colleague, Dr. Hermann Gottlieb.
The New Jaegers
Pacific Rim is all about Jaegers vs. Kaiju. While we haven't seen any Kaiju just yet, some promotional material has hit the internet revealing the first look at Pacific Rim: Uprising's Jaegers.
Legendary Pictures hasn't officially commented on the Jaegers, but they appear to be upgraded versions of the main trio of Jaegers from the first Pacific Rim. Those are Gypsy Danger - which is rumored to take the name Gypsy Avenger in its upgraded form - Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon.
