It has been a confusing week for fans of Tokyo Ghoul. The action-horror anime stand as one of Japan's most popular shows, and international fans have embraced it as well. Later this year, the franchise is set to make a comeback when a live-action adaptation of the anime hits theaters abroad. However, fans worried a wrench would be thrown into the film's plans when one of its stars suddenly announced their retirement. The studio behind the project doesn't seem to think that's the case, but another unexpected update did come from the ordeal.

Yes, that's right; Plans for a live-action Tokyo Ghoul sequel are already underway even though the movie is not out quite yet.

According to Japan's Daily Sport, the site reported that a sequel was already being developed. Fumika Shimizu was in negotiations to star in the second movie as its female lead, but those talks have now ended since the actress had announced her retirement.

For the most part, the studio behind the Tokyo Ghoul film is keeping mum about the casting snafu, but it has released a statement via Twitter. As translated by Crunchyroll, you can read the updates below:

"To everyone who is looking forward to the film 'Tokyo Ghoul': We are very sorry to have caused you anxiety for the film by a series of the reports on the cast. We are currently checking the situation. (continued)

"In regard to the future, we will keep watching closely how the situation develops and discuss with the parties concerned. The latest announcements will be published on this page as soon as it comes in. We appreciate your understanding. From the all staff of the film 'Tokyo Ghoul'"

If you are not familiar with Tokyo Ghoul, then you can read up about the series below. The series is set in an alternate reality where creatures known as ghouls exist. The horrifying monsters survive by consuming human flesh and live amongst humans in secret. The story follows a boy named Ken Kaneki after a date-gone-wrong leaves him a half-ghoul. Struggling to adapt to his new life, Ken tries his best to fit into ghoul society, keep his monstrous status hidden from humans, and reign in the insatiable hunger he has for flesh.

The series debuted in September 2011 thanks to mangaka Sui Ishida. Weekly Young Jump first published the manga before it was adapted into an anime series by Pierrot. The anime premiered in July 2014 before a second season ran in January 2015. A third season has also been confirmed though no official release date has been attached to the project so far.
