The might of the ancient evil Apocalypse is nothing compared to an old man and a little girl, as Logan pulled in $9.5 million in Thursday night previews, besting the last X-Men film's $8.2 million. It's a mighty feat, being a March debut over a May one, and a Rated R film over a more accessible PG-13. It also more than doubled The Wolverine debut at about $4 million.

However, old man Logan still can't defeat the wisecracking fourth-wall-breaking Deadpool, which easily holds onto the R-Rated preview night record with $12.7 million. The overall record belongs to Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $57 million; it's safe to say that record won't be touched by any R-rated film.

It's a huge win for the final run as Wolverine and Charles Xavier for Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart respectively, and for director James Mangold as he gives them the sendoff critics say they deserve. It was certified fresh earlier this week with mid ninetieth percentile ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, and has an early rating of 4.57/5 from ComicBook.com's readership. You can rate it after seeing it in the box below, as well.

Logan takes place in the year 2029, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.

Logan is in theaters now.
