Power Rangers is now in theaters, and making a respectable buck at the box office. The Power Rangers movie reboot had a lot of secret twists, camoes and Easter eggs from the franchise's various series - but also brought some new elements to the mythos.
One of those new elements of Power Rangers' backstory involved the revised origin for Bryan Cranston's Zordon. Leading up to Power Rangers' release it was heavily rumored that Cranston could have a second, secret role in the film besides Zordon - and now we know that rumor was indeed true.... sort of.
Warning! MAJOR SPOILERS Follow!
When the young Power Rangers team first stumble upon lair of Zordon and Alpha 5, they get the history of the Rangers from Zordon himself. The big reveal in this scene is that there was a previous team of Power Rangers who died when one of their own, Green Ranger Rita, turned to evil and became Rita Repulsa, slaying her fellow Rangers.
The last of that Ranger team to fall was its leader, The Red Ranger, Zordon!
That's right Power Rangers fans (or casual readers who don't care about spoilers), in this movie continuity Bryan Cranston is both Zordon and the former Red Ranger, who had his essence sealed into a holographic projection by Alpha 5, just before his body died. So, while we don't necessarily see much Bryan Cranston playing his role as Red Ranger during the course of the film (beyond the opening battle with Rita's Green Ranger), it's nonetheless the secret secondary role he occupies in the mythos.
Now that the Power Rangers movie franchise is here, and seems to be solidly established, there's potential that we could see more of Cranston's Zordon in Red Ranger form. Cranston teased as much by wearing a Red Ranger costume from the classic Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series - so that's a start! Maybe a Power Rangers sequel will give us even more of the old Rangers and Zordon's era.
