Having a resume stacked with action movies, Mark Wahlberg is now ready to take on a superhero role. Kind of.
Speaking with the Transformers-franchise star on the red carpet of CinemaCon, Walhberg told ComicBook that he could begin shooting a reboot of the 1970s classic, The Six Million Dollar Man.
"We finally got the script for The Six Billion Dollar Man," he said. "Now that's not your typical superhero because I will not put on a cape nor a spandex outfit, but the script is amazing.
"The script is amazing. We've been developing it for quite some time and finally got it to where we want to go shoot the movie, so hopefully we will shoot in the fall."
Six BILLION Dollar Man.
Shooting in the fall.
You have our attention, Mark.
Originally airing as a trio of science fiction and action movies it became a television series from 1974 to 78. The show was focused on former astronaut, Colonel Steve Austin, who was given superhuman strength after he was implanted with bionic parts by the federal government.
It could be argued that it was a hybrid of Wolverine and Cyborg, worked into one show that went on to become a cultural phenomenon.
This would be the sixth time that the project has attempted a reboot in the last quarter century. Previous attempts were dating back to 1995 when it was tied to Kevin Smith; 2001 to the Dimension films production team which then fumbled an attempt in 2004 with Jim Carrey trying a more comedic approach; in 2006 Richard Anderson teased its revamp at ComicCon but it ultimately died on the vine in a dispute between Miramax and Universal -- though the dispute lead to The Bionic Man comic adaptation coming from Smith's original script; in 2014 it was also rumored to be tied to Wahlberg and Peter Berg, but when Berg dropped out it was since dopped.
Now, filming could start -- according to Wahlberg -- in the fall with a release the next year.
As for his current project, Transformers: The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Haddock).
The cast of Transformers: The Last Knight features Mark Wahlberg (Planet of the Apes) as Cade Yeager, Isabela Moner (100 Things To Do Before High School) as Izabella, Josh Duhamel (Life as We Know It) as Lieutenant Colonel William Lennox, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Seymour Simmons, and Tyrese Gibson (Furious 7) as Robert Epps, as well as Jerrod Carmichael (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising), Anthony Hopkins (Thor: The Dark World). The voice cast includes Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane) as Hound.
There comes a moment in everyone's life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.
Michael Bay will return to direct. Transformers: The Last Knight opens in theaters on June 23, 2017.
