Things have been a rollercoaster ride for the Inhumans over the last year, though it all started even before that when the terrigen crystals ceased to be an option for terrigenesis. Then it was the terrigen mist that almost caused the mutant race to go extinct, a circumstance that caused the X-Men to go to war with the Inhumans, destroying the terrigen mists in the process. Any of those events would wear on someone, but all of them could cause even the strongest to fade, and that seems to be the case with a particular member of the Inhumans royal family.
Spoilers ahead for Royals #1, so you've been warned.
In Royals #1, a mission presents itself that has the potential to reveal a hidden aspect of just who the Inhumans are, and what they are capable of. In that discovery lies the potential for a new way to bring new Inhumans into the family, and that is reason enough for Medusa, Crystal, Flint, Gorgon, and Jovana, along with Noh-Var to head out into space.
By issue's end though it becomes apparent that something is not right with the former Inhuman queen, as she runs her hand through her hair, pulling a large clump out her powerful hair with it. She thinks to herself "I see. Well then, have the courage of your crown, Queen of nothing. Speak it aloud." With that, she says aloud "I...I'm dying."
This is likely the reason we see her without her hair on a few variant covers, but exactly what she's dying from and why is still unknown, but it will undoubtedly have an effect on her powerset, as her hair has always been the source of it.
Royals is written by Al Ewing with art by Jonboy Meyers. Make sure to check out the exclusive preview of the debut issue in the gallery, and the official description can be found below.
A myth from the future. A quest to the far stars. A legend written across galaxies. Guided by the other-dimensional Kree warrior known as Marvel Boy, the Inhuman Royal Family departs on an odyssey across all creation on search for lost secrets — and the last hope — of their people. Penned by fan-favorite Al Ewing (The Ultimates, New Avengers, Loki: Agent of Asgard) and drawn by the white-hot Jonboy Meyers (Teen Titans, Spawn), ROYALS is a Marvel-style space epic that takes the Inhuman Royal Family and plunges them into the unknown! The knowledge they seek could change the course of Inhuman destiny, but it cannot be attained without cost...for at the end of days, the Last Inhuman tells the tale of how seven left Earth for the stars...but only six returned.
Royals #1 is in comic stores today for $3.99.
