New Fullmetal Alchemist Trailer Shows Human Transmutation Scene

Fullmetal Alchemist fans, it looks like April is bringing some long-awaited gifts for you. Thanks to Warner Bros. Japan, the second full trailer for Fullmetal Alchemist has dropped, and it shows off plenty of new footage. In the minute-long video, fans watch as Edward and Alphonse Elric are shown in a flashback as the children mourn the loss of a loved one. Desperate to bring them back, the two protagonists make the decision to explore a dangerous branch of alchemy to revive their mother - and it doesn't go well.

Anime fans will know that the Elric Brothers ultimately fail to bring back Trisha, and the consequences of trying their hand at human transmutation are immense. The two boys must face to cost of equivalent exchange, leading Alphonse to lose his body while Edward loses his limbs. However, the most daunting part of the ordeal comes when the boys comes face-to-face with The Gate.

The Gate is a recurring location within Fullmetal Alchemist as it acts as a place of penance or damnation. Anyone who is caught trying to perform human transmutation is summoned to The Gate, and it then judges what the alchemist must lose in order to recoup equivalent exchange. Before anyone is brought to The Gate, they are surrounded back a mass of dark shadows which turn into slender arms. The hands then grip onto the person in question, dragging them to their fate.

In the new trailer for Fullmetal Alchemist, fans are shown the lead-up to what will become the boy's entrance to The Gate. Video shows the pair beginning the transmutation ceremony, but the power needed to bring back Trisha is beyond their control. Their small home is blown apart by The Gate's power, and Alphonse is then swept away from Edward as the elder reaches for his younger brother.

Talk about sad, right?

If you are not familiar with Fullmetal Alchemist, then you have plenty of time to watch the anime before its live-action film arrives. The series follows brothers Edward and Alphonse after their mother tragically passes. They attempt to use alchemy to resurrect her, but the attempt takes Edward's arm and leg - and it takes Alphonse's entire body. Determined to get their bodies restored, Edward and Alphonse try to become State Alchemists so they can find the location of a powerful item known as the Philosopher's Stone. But their journey ultimately leads them into a seedy world of government corruption and mass genocide.

This year, fans of the shonen series will be able to see more of the Elric Brothers than they have for some time. In December, Warner Bros. Japan will release the first live-action adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist.

Fullmetal Alchemist will debut in Japan on December 1.
