When Spider-Homecoming was filming, its working title was "Summer Of George." The codename was used to keep paparazzi and the general public from flocking to the set. Plus, it is also a reference to the title of the eighth season finale of Seinfeld. In that episode, George Costanza receives a severance package from the New York Yankees, and it's enough money for the lovable loser to do whatever he likes for the summer, but he instead wastes his financial freedom by being incredibly lazy.
Was that Seinfeld reference intentional? "We pick code names that make us giggle. Around that time in L.A., there was the channel that showed the Seinfeld reruns from 10 to 11 pm, and we all started coming in the next day and talking about Seinfeld," co-producer Eric Carroll told SR, and other members of the press, during a set visit. "And when we had to pick a code name for this, 'Summer of George' was one [suggestion] that made us all laugh the hardest. Our email addresses are Episode 1456.com, which is, that's the reason."
Additionally, they considered having a member of the Seinfeld cast make a cameo. "For a while, we were going to try and throw a cameo in there, too," Carroll added, "but [something] just snuck up on us."
Based on the working title, we'll assume that Jason Alexander, who portrayed George, was the member of the cast that would have been asked to appear in the film.
By the way, if any member of the Seinfeld cast was to make an appearance in a comic book movie, it should be a Superman film. That's because its title main star and co-creator, Jerry Seinfeld, is a huge fan of the Man of Steel and made sure to include (obvious and subtle) references to DC Comics' iconic superhero in many (not all like it is sometimes reported) of the show's 180 episodes.
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
The cast features Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Logan Marshall-Green, and Marisa Tomei.
The film is being directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), based on a screenplay by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley (Vacation reboot) and Jon Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers.
