With more than a dozen films under its belt, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become one of Hollywood's biggest franchise of all time. The series began back in 2008 with Iron Man, and it currently has plans which run it up past 2018. Heroes like Captain America and Thor have become mainstays in the franchise, and other small-time heroes like Ant-Man have also been granted films of their own. However, prior to Marvel Studios' release of Guardians of the Galaxy, the MCU was a fairly tame franchise save for the stray alien invasion.
However, that has all changed now. Guardians of the Galaxy proved Marvel Studios had the capacity to capitalize on weirdness when it premiered. And, now, the company's president is revealing how much the intergalactic superhero flick helped the MCU take more risks.
In an interview with Heroic Hollywood, Kevin Feige spoke with the site about how Guardians of the Galaxy allowed the MCU to take greater creative risks.
"The success of Guardians just boosted our confidence to continue to go in new, fun, weird directions, and I think that led to Doctor Strange and certainly, ultimately, leads to the things we're doing in Infinity War," Feige explained.
"You know we did the comic books as you well know do all sorts of fun, mind-bending, trippy storylines that you really hadn't seen in any movies until we started scratching that surface with Thor and a little bit more in Avengers. A little bit in the quantum realm of Ant-Man.
Later, Feige stressed the folks behind the MCU are ready to test audiences with whatever inter-dimensional magic they can come up with. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will bring that run-up to fans when it debuts next month, and all its weird bits will culminate in Avengers: Infinity War.
"It was really Guardians and then Strange and now Guardians 2 which is saying, 'Okay, the audience is gonna stay with us on this.' Why even attempt to make a movie out of the infinity gauntlet if you can't really do a lot of the crazy things that happen in that Jim Starlin imagination."
