Though Groot may be small right now, he is still very mighty. Vin Diesel is putting all his star power behind the huggable tree, and it looks like the action star is pushing on ahead with a personal project of his. This year, Diesel made it know that he wanted a Groot spinoff film to happened, and the star has raved about the opportunities such a movie would give. And, now, Diesel and director James Gunn just reminded fans of the intriguing possibility.
In an interview with USA Today, Diesel was not shy when it came to praising Groot or sharing his love for the character.
"James Gunn has always wanted a Rocket and Groot movie," Diesel said.
"I know that Disney is very much into being successful. And the most successful poster in Disney's future is the poster that has 'Groot vs. Hulk.' ... (The world) cannot wait to see it."
However, there is no telling how Marvel Studios feels about this particular route. Groot may be popular, but the character does have a limited vocabulary. Pairing Groot with Rocket for a spinoff would be an ideal heist feature, but the company might want to stress test Groot's massive appeal a bit more before committing to such a project.
When USA Today asked Gunn about the possible spinoff, the director did not shoot it down. Instead, he laughed about Diesel's enthusiasm and never-ending ideas.
"Vin has a lot of ideas. I don't know where he comes up with these things!" Gunn joked. "I love Vin."
Back in January, Diesel first mentioned the idea of a Groot spinoff film during a chat with MTV. It was there that Diesel said the film is one Gunn has mentioned before, and he even said the spinoff was inevitable.
"It's something that James Gunn has talked about, and something that I know he'd love to do. Sure, I think it could be very interesting. I think it's inevitable, I think, ya know, that character's so enigmatic. He was already one of the most unique characters in the Marvel Universe, and I think what Marvel has done, primarily what James Gunn has done to realize that character has exceeded anyone and everyone's expectations."
