In last night's episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, "Farewell, Cruel World!," the agents finally managed to escape the virtual world of the Framework. However, just because they've left the Framework doesn't mean the Framework is done with them.
According to the executive producers of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, the agents all still remember their lives in the Framework and the acts and sins they committed. Each character deals with this differently.
For both Fitz and May, who were loyal Hydra agents in the framework, there will be a long road to recovery.
"I think that they will struggle with it, some more than others," Jed Whedon tells Entertainment weekly. "May has a pretty dark outlook on life as it is, but I think for Fitz, it would be something that will define him for the rest of his life."
On the other hand, Coulson may become even stronger through the memories of his Framework experience.
"And for others, like Coulson, he knows some stuff historically, like how did you know that?" Jeff Bell says. "He goes, 'Oh, I was a history teacher,' so he's actually got this whole other life to draw upon from the Framework that can form who he is in this one. So, it's as if they've lived two whole lives."
Of course, one agent, Mack, decided to stay behind in the Framework. "He knows that his daughter is now alive, and he'd rather stay there and spend the time he has with her than to go back," Bell explains. "Just think if you could choose to live a beautiful lie versus a painful reality, which do you choose?"
But Yo-Yo isn't giving up on Mack. "She has her work cut out for her. She has to convince a man who doesn't know who she is that he should choose her over his own daughter."
Marvel's Agents of SHIELD airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
Marvel's Agents of SHIELD returns with a vengeance for the fourth exciting season in an all new time period, Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. ET. In the aftermath of their journey to another planet, Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the rest of the team were driven more than ever to put an end to the Hydra organization. Little did they know that they were up against the deadliest threat they've ever faced – an extremely powerful Inhuman, Hive, who was transported back from Maveth in the body of their worst enemy, Grant Ward. The team was able to thwart and kill Hive and take down Hydra, but they are all still mourning the death of fellow agent and Inhuman, Lincoln Campbell.
