Earlier this year, Marvel Studios finally kicked off work on its biggest project yet thanks to Avengers: Infinity War. The film, which will be overseen by Joe and Anthony Russo, began production in Georgia several weeks back. Now, the project is filming over in Scotland at a slew of foreign locales, leaving fans eager to learn more about how cities like Edinburgh fit into the next Avengers film. However, when it comes to the film's newest shooting location, it seems like geography has very little to do with why the area was chosen.
Thanks to the Sunderland Echo, fans just learned a bit more about how the Dean of Durham Cathedral will be used in Avengers: Infinity War. The Russo Brothers spoke with Reverend Andrew Tremlett about the location, and the pair said the holy location will be used in several scenes throughout the film. But, most importantly, the directors added that the cathedral would not appear on-screen as a church of any kind.
Of course, the last confession has caught the attention of fans worldwide. Social media has started to churn out ideas of what the cathedral may be standing in place of. Equipment likes green-screens have been seen on-site, leading fans to believe the scene will involve the Guardians of the Galaxy or Thanos. The former suspicion was only made bigger when dummies of Rocket Raccoon were seen at the cathedral.
If the scenes involves the Guardians, fans are curious as to whether the cathedral may become Thanos' home. In Marvel's Infinity Gauntlet run, the comics depicted Thanos living in a massive white palace with ornate carvings. The Durham Cathedral could be tweaked in post-production to make it more suitable for the Mad Titan.
However, there is another piece of information which has fans thinking the set may house something more Asgardian. Earlier this week, set photos showed that a familiar statue was on location for the movie. A large statue of a warrior was shown kneeling with his sword by his side, and fans of the MCU quickly realized the object was seen in Thor's vision from Avengers: Age of Ultron. The set could be a clever nod, but Marvel is too involved for fans to think the addition is a coincidence. Some think the cathedral could become a set related to Asgard in some fashion, perhaps even being Valhalla or Death's lair itself.
Avengers: Infinity War is described by Marvel Studios as the culmination of everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man in 2008. The movie is filming now under directors Anthony and Joe Russo, from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The expansive confirmed cast includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bethany, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, and Josh Brolin as the villain Thanos. Avengers: Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel are filming back-to-back for a May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 release, respectively.
