DC Comics is rapidly approaching their first major event of the Rebirth era with Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Dark Nights: Metal comic series.
The fan-favorite creative duo are teaming up for the first time since their critically and commercially successful Batman for during the New 52. And though Batman will be front and center in this new series, the entire DC Universe will be used.
Capullo has begun teasing his artwork on the series, which isn't set to debut until August, giving fans a glimpse at updated costume designs for the main players in the Justice League. The artwork also appeared in DC's latest All Access video.
The characters are taking on a decidedly gladiatorial appearance as the grip weapons and stand amid a pile of slaughtered aliens, as it appears.
There's also a minor appearance of Mongul, the alien leader of Warworld, who watches the battle pits from his throne among other spectators in the arena.

Alongside Capullo's previously released cover on which Batman wields a pair of battle axes, it appears as though the Justice League members will be utilizing melee weapons in some part of the story. Wonder Woman has traditionally used many weapons, while it's interesting to see Superman holding a spiked mace.
Hints of the story so far seem to indicate that Hawkman will play a major role in the comic, as will the fictional Nth metal that gives him the ability to fly. The material is native to Hawkman's home planet (depending on the continuity) of Thanagar.
The series will begin after two prequel issues released in July, called Dark Days: The Casting and Dark Days: The Forge, cowritten by Snyder and James Tynion IV with art by Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, and John Romita Jr. The event will also lead to the creation of a new line of comics referred to as "Dark Matter" which will bring new comics to the line, including Sideways, New Challengers, Damage, The Silencer, and Immortal Men.
It remains to be seen how and why the Justice League get covered in alien blood as Mongul watches on, but we're suspecting that everything isn't as it appears to be. The League doesn't typically partake in wanton slaughter. However, given Snyder's and Capullo's penchant to tell big, ridiculous stories, we wouldn't be surprised.
