Geek culture continues to influence just about everything thanks to hit films and franchises like Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Suicide Squad. While there is a lot of love for Harley as a baby name these days, it couldn't compete with Star Wars.
Specifically Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. The movie introduced the Sith villain Kylo Ren to the masses (played by Adam Driver) and became immensely popular after fans filed out of the theater. That popularity has crossed over to baby names, and Kylo has subsequently become the fastest rising boy baby name of 2016 in the United States (via ScreenRant). Not only that, but the social security administration says that it also saw the biggest increase in popularity from 2015 to 2016. In 2015 the name was ranked at 3,269. In 2016 the name made a massive jump to 901, overtaking 2368 spots. Ironically the name is close to surpassing Ben, which just happens to be his real name. Nobody tell him that though, or else he'll start throwing his lightsaber again, and no one wants that.
The popularity for the name should only continue to increase, as Kylo Ren will make his return to theaters in this year's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film will pick up right after the previous movie ended, and fans are already wondering what's in store for Kylo this time around, especially after a shot of his broken mask was show in the teaser.
As for the other baby names that increased in popularity, they were Creed, Benicio, Adonis, Fox, and Kye. Shepherd also increased, and while probably not related, it would be interesting to see how many of those parents were Mass Effect fans. Just saying.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017, release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong'o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is slated for release on December 15, 2017. Han Solo: A Star Wars Story hits on May 25, 2018, while Star Wars: Episode IX has a release date of May 24, 2019.
