Sony's PlayStation Network is slowly but surely becoming quite a force with its online features and other functions for users to take advantage of. And now, it has a record number of consumers to its credit.

Sony Corporation has reported the latest numbers for the network during its Corporate Strategy Meeting in Tokyo, and it made note that the network has managed to reach a total of 70 million monthly active users – quite a reach for a network that only got its start several years ago. Not to mention the fact that Xbox Live has only achieved about 52 to 55 million monthly active users over the last year.

The company also made note of another important feat that it will reach this year – units shipped with the PlayStation 4. It's no surprise that the company cleared 60 million units shipped at the end of 2016, but this year will bring an even higher number, with 78 million units shipped by the end of 2017. That's not units sold, mind you – but with the pending holiday season, and games like Gran Turismo Sport, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and possibly God of War available for the system, that's likely to happen.

Sony has been gaining quite the advantage with this generation of consoles, as the PlayStation 4 has seen a steady lead over the Xbox One in terms of sales and exclusive titles. Microsoft's trying to play catch-up with its forthcoming Project Scorpio hardware, but it's too hard to call without seeing something in action. The PlayStation 4 Pro may not have seen the sales numbers that Sony was wanting, but at least the original PS4 – and its PS4 Slim counterpart – have been performing admirably enough.

We'll see how things go over the next few months, but both PlayStation 4 units sold and PlayStation Network subscribers are likely to rise over that period, especially once we see what Sony is up to for the next year following its E3 presentation. Here's hoping we see a lot of surprises – and maybe a few release dates to keep us on our toes for the holiday rush.
