Next month, Wonder Woman is set to take the world by storm with her first live-action solo feature. The iconic DC heroine will follow-up her part in Batman v Superman with a standalone origin tale, and critics can't get enough of the film already. The praised DCEU piece will see Gal Gadot reprise her work as the Amazon warrior, but the actress came close to missing out on the role entirely.
As it turns out, Gadot was just a few steps shy of giving up acting before her number was called for Wonder Woman.
During the actress' recent press rounds for Wonder Woman, Gadot stopped by the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to talk superheroes. It was there the star said she had been planning to wrap her acting career shortly before Wonder Woman came through.
"This profession, the rejection is tough. I had so many almost and another camera test and it was almost mine. Then another and another," Gadot said. "I was telling my husband, I'm not sure how long I can take it. Dragging my family to Los Angeles doing this."
However, things took a turn for Gadot's career after Zack Snyder took interest in her. The director famously asked the star to audition for an unknown role, and Gadot was floored when she learned the part was for Wonder Woman.
"I got a phone call from Zack Snyder who wanted to audition me for this secret role. I did the audition. It went great. I went back to Israel to shoot a movie and I didn't know if I wanted to continue acting afterwards," Gadot explained.
"I'm in Israel, they tell me they wanted to do a camera test–again, a camera test, again–another almost, almost. [I asked] 'What am I being tested for? What's the part?' My agent goes, 'They didn't tell you?' Zack calls me and tells me, 'I dunno if you have this character in Israel, if she's big or not, but did you ever hear about Wonder Woman?' [I said] 'Wonder Woman, I'll be there yeah.'"
When news broke that Gadot had been cast as Diana Prince, some fans of the DCEU were quick to criticize the decision. The star's acting credits were torn apart by naysayers, and many questioned if Gadot had what it takes to bring such an iconic character to life. However, those fears quickly dissipated following Wonder Woman's debut in Batman v Superman. Now, the public can't find a bad thing to say about the star's take on the hero. With Wonder Woman pulling in rave reviews from fans and critics, it looks like Gadot was right to give her acting career another shot when she felt it was time to stop years ago.
Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.
Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and is written by Allan Heinberg, Geoff Johns, and Zack Snyder. The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).
