There have been some interesting new fronts in the never-ending console war lately. Xbox lovers and PlayStation faithful have been butting heads recently, as a Eurogamer interview with Phil Spencer suggested with some ambiguity that the Xbox One X version of any game should be the definitive edition, and should show marked improvements over the same game on any other platform -- including PS4. But will they? Could deals between Sony and Activision end up ultimately holding back games like Destiny 2 from running at its very best?

Bungie says no. In a series of tweets, Destiny 2 project lead Mark Noseworthy stated that this was nonsense. "We would never hold back game performance on a platform to appease a partner. No partners asked us to either. We optimize for each platform's tech to deliver the best social action game experience we can. Period. "

He goes on, "All consoles will run at 30fps to deliver D2's AI counts, environment sizes, and # of players. They are all CPU-bound. We are currently evaluating 4K for Xbox One X. It launches after D2 and so we are focused on the launch consoles right now."

Mark is saying very clearly that they'll optimize to the utmost on the Xbox One X, and Destiny 2 won't be held back in any way to appease Sony. Well except for some exclusive strikes, gear, and other content that PlayStation players will likely get way before anyone on Xbox, but that's a different argument for a different article. The point here is that if Destiny 2 was capable of running at 60fps on Xbox One X like it is on PC, then Bungie would make that happen.

For reference, here is Phil Spencer's comment which made some Xbox One X players paranoid: "I don't think it's good for our industry if we got into a point where people are holding back the technical innovation of game developers based on a marketing deal. I don't know anything about what's in other people's deals. But this, clearly, from a technical perspective, is the most powerful console by quite a wide margin. So, when I stood on-stage and I said this will be the best place to play all those games, there's nothing technically that would keep any developer from not making that true."

It was that comment, along with the fact that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One X versions of Destiny 2 are likely going to see performance parity with the PS4 version, that got people talking. Hopefully we'll see a sizable resolution bump on the Xbox One X when it launches, but if not, we have a feeling that Destiny 2 will be just as fun.
