If you aren't living under a rock, you've probably heard about Pokemon Go's major new update. The update brings an updated gym system complete with badges and a few new competitive features like raids. The new update is also adding some more subtle perks to gyms, such as the ability to pull items similar to how PokeStops currently function.

Adding item distribution to gyms does lesser the impact that PokeStops have on the game. Pokemon Go seemed to anticipate this, as the game's developer turned a number of PokeStops into gyms just before the update went live.

Now, there's only two benefits that PokeStops have over gyms. Currently, PokeStops are still used by the in-game tracker to show where nearby Pokemon are lurking. Players can also add lure modules to PokeStops, which cause more Pokemon to spawn nearby.

Once the new gym system gets settled, Pokemon Go should seriously consider adding more PokeStop modules to the game in order to keep PokeStops relevant. Developers stated last year that they eventually planned to add "customization" to PokeStops, but they never followed up. There's even code hidden in the game that hints at more modules that can be used to attract specific types of Pokemon to PokeStops.

The game even hints at plans for more modules in the future, as the game clearly states that lure modules are just one type of PokeStop Modules. While Lure Modules are the only modules currently available, the module slot screen is set up to allow players to pick from more than one module option.

The new gym update is a great next step for Pokemon Go, but there's still lots of room for growth. Adding more modules is an easy step to keep players engaged and prevent PokeStops from becoming the next aspect of Pokemon Go that needs to be fixed.
