For Captain America: Civil War, the Russo Brothers insist Spider-Man was always a part of the plan. For Spider-Man: Homecoming, it appears the same can be said about Iron Man.
A collaboration between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios allowed Spider-Man to have his own standalone film which exists in conjunction with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film sees 20-year-old Tom Holland portraying Peter Parker but also pulls Robert Downey Jr. into the mix to reprise his role as Tony Stark and Iron Man.
"He was always a part of it," Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts tells Den of Geek. "That was always a big part, the idea of him being this reluctant mentor – or the unintentional mentor – to Peter. Like, just sort of the grand ambition to be like that someday."
Watts has done a thorough bit of thinking about how a figure such as Tony Stark would affect a young Peter Parker who would be seeing him on television and all over the place, especially considering he is confirmed to have attended the Stark Expo in Iron Man 2.
"Now that Spider-Man is in the Marvel universe, that means that Peter Parker was probably like eight years old when he saw Tony on TV telling the world he's Iron Man," Watts said. "And when you start thinking about it as a whole world like that, it gets really fascinating. You know?"
"And now the most famous person in the world has picked Peter Parker and taken him on this crazy adventure, and now dropped him back off and gone to deal with his own thing. And here's Peter, left in his bedroom, you know, having had the greatest experience of his life, and not being able to tell anyone about it. That would be crazy!"
