There have been a ton of announcements this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con In fact, it's rather easy to see some slip through the cracks because there's so much happening. But we thought we'd give some love to a series that deserves to get some credit, especially since it's making its way to comic books in 2018 – Gears of War!

The official Gears of War page confirmed that the new series would be starting in January 2018, with Gears of War #1 "emerging" onto the comic book landscape.

The first partnership for this expanded Gears of War universe content teams the franchise alongside IDW Publishing and writer Kurtis Wiebe, who previously worked on Rat Queens, that will tell a new arc in the popular game series – kind of like Gears of War 4 did when it arrived for Xbox One and Windows PC last year.

Said Wiebe about the forthcoming partnership, "I'm thrilled to be part of this new adaptation with IDW. With the release of Gears of War 4, fans experienced all the classic callbacks to the brutal, over-the-top action and tone they were used to but there was a new dynamic created with the younger generation of heroes in JD, Kait and Del. That's the same experience I want for the comic readers. Something that feels familiar but fresh through new, as-of-yet unexplored regions and stories of the Gears of War universe."

A promo Illustration featuring the three main characters was also released, and can be seen below, and while it's not quite final content that will be featured, these heroes are sure to show up as the series gets underway.

Gears 2

More details on how this Gears of War expanded universe will play out are sure to be revealed over the next few months, closer to the first issue's release. We're not sure if The Coalition will make in-game content for Gears of War 4 that will tie in with it, but it's been very supportive with players, offering a bevy of free and paid content for them to enjoy, so it wouldn't surprise us if something were to happen.

Gears of War 4 is available now on Xbox One and Windows PC.
