Pokemon Go added Articuno and Lugia as Raid Bosses over the weekend, but one of those two Pokemon might not be a permanent addition to the game. Pokemon's official webpage recently posted an article about the Articuno's appearance in game, but noted that its stay was only a temporary one.

"Now everyone can catch Articuno," reads the article. "But it will appear at Gyms only for a brief while, so join your friends and try to defeat this awesome Pokemon." No specific timeframe is given, but it could be a matter of days before Articuno flies off again from Pokemon Go.

This is the first we've heard that Articuno would only be a temporary Raid Boss. Previously, it was assumed that Articuno and Lugia would both be permanently added to the Raid Boss pool, soon to be followed by other Pokemon. When Niantic announced the arrival of Articuno this weekend, they made no indication that it was only for a limited time.

The same article also notes that the Legendary Birds Zapdos and Moltres would both be appearing "soon" in Gyms for players to challenge. It also implies that Lugia will be a permanent Raid Boss, since there's no mention of it appearing for a specific length of time.

If Articuno is a temporary Raid Boss, it opens up a lot of intriguing questions and possibilities. Will Pokemon Go have a rotating set of Legendary Raids, similar to their biweekly Nest Migrations? Or will they only unleash certain Legendary Raid Bosses during specific events or weekends?

People are excited for Legendary Pokemon and adding a time limit to when the Raids appear will only add to the urgency of capturing Articuno before it disappears. Rotating Legendary Pokemon could also keep players actively playing instead of getting bored once they captured and powered up all of the Legendary Pokemon.

We've reached out to Niantic Labs for comment and will provide an update if we hear a reply.
