Wonder Woman has passed Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 at the North American box office to become the top-grossing summer movie of 2017.
The presumption is that Wonder Woman will keep the title, with the summer more than half over and most of the films expected to make huge amounts of money at the box office in 2017 either in the rear view mirror or not arriving until the fall.
Wonder Woman currently sits at $391 million, compared to $387 million for Guardians. The lead may increase, with Warner Bros. likely hoping for at least $400 million domestic at this point for Wonder Woman's theatrical run, while Guardians is all but gone from the big screen in anticipation of its upcoming home video release.
Wonder Woman has already passed the worldwide box office total of Man of Steel ($668 million), but Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice remains the highest-grossing film in the shared universe worldwide ($873.3 million) and internationally ($543.2). Suicide Squad is still the second highest performer outside of the United States ($745.6 million worldwide, $420.5 international). The film is still breaking records; it's on a pace to become one of the highest-grossing solo superhero movies (the highest-grossing in some international territories) and potentially to overtake Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 as the top superhero movie of the year so far.
Wonder Woman may also become the highest-grossing superhero origin film of all time, if it can pass Spider-Man (Sam Raimi's version) before it wraps its theatrical run.
Wonder Woman has received nearly universal critical approval. The film broke the records for biggest domestic opening for a female director and the biggest opening for a female-led comic book film with $103.3 million.

Gal Gadot made her debut as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. She will return as Wonder Woman alongside the DC Extended Universe's other heroes in Justice League in November 2017.
