None of us dreamed that Steve Rogers, the most patriotic man to ever throw on a pair of tights, could have what it takes to turn into a supervillainous monster. However, that's exactly what happened in Marvel's ongoing Secret Empire saga -- and fans are still reeling over the controversial decision to turn Captain Americainto the head of Hydra.

Of course, it all goes without saying that most fans are hoping Steve Rogers will revert back into his old-fashioned self, but will that happen? It remains to be seen, but in the meantime, ComicBook.com has decided to take a look back at happier times by ranking the 10 Best Captain America Costumes!

Take our No. 3 choice on the list, for example -- Captain America's costume from his first appearance in Captain America Comics #1 in 1941. How can you turn this guy into a supervillain!? He's draped from head to toe in the stars and stripes while sluggin' the crap out of Hitler!

Cap's first appearance is very reminiscent of the Captain America fans would grow to know and love over the next 75 years. Most of the trademark look is there: He's got the big "A" on his forehead, the side-wings on the mask, the giant star emblem on the chest, and even the bright red buccaneer style boots.

The biggest difference in this costume compared to the more classic suit most fans are familiar with is the missing blue neck in the costume, and the shield. This issue would be the only appearance of this shield (shaped to resemble the traditional shield on the SEAL of the United States) and was changed to the trademark disc shield in the following issue thanks to a lawsuit from Archie comics.
