When Hela arrives on Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok, she will do so on a beautifully built set representing common areas of Asgard.
While on set of Thor: Ragnarok, ComicBook.com explored several stages which are used in the film but none compared to the size and detail of Agard's ground level. Smooth, curved wooden walls round out the common area which serve as the base to what will be sky scraping golden towers when effects are added for Thor: Ragnarok's theatrical cut.
The outdoor set, which can be rearranged a bit to portray other ground-level locations in Asgard, comes equipped with a real canal flowing through it, shops and homes, Nordic symbolism cared into several places, and a stage-like centerpiece which sits atop a staircase with arches calling all of the attention to it. The stage, for example, will be changed out for "something else."
This is where Hela will make her entrance according to production designer Dan Hennah (The Hobbit trilogy, Alice Through the Looking Glass).
"They're the bases of huge buildings that run up to the sky. For the first time in the Thor series of films, we've embraced the lower end end of Asgard, the human-scale living quarters as opposed to the great big palace, itself. We do spend some time in the palace but we also spend quite a lot of time in different parts of the city."
Thor: Ragnarok will explore this seemingly uncharted portion of Asgard for a number of reasons. Though the film will never go into the homes of the resident's or explore their lives too intimately, it will introduce the common people ruled by Odin's lineage, "partly because of Hela whose mission is to take over Asgard and, as Queen of Death, she needs more people to kill."
"We also have Thor and his team, who are going to thwart or attempt to thwart Hela, turning up here," Hennah points out. "We have refugees being taken out of the city. We need to get down to that population level."
Floating around the entire location were Asgardian extras who were on set to film in another location and scene, but it sounds as though these are the people who will be flooding the plaza-like sets during the movie. Their costumes were noticeably simpler than those of Thor and the people he is surrounded by. Rather than decked out in gold or silver plates and armor, the people wore material looking much more ragged with medieval themes.
The aforementioned canal, however, also has a significant role in the film. "Its where the end fight between Fenris and Hulk takes place," Hennah said. "It's a huge punch out, water flying everywhere."
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters November 3, 2017. Advance tickets are now on sale wherever tickets are sold.
