The first synopsis for this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special is teasing a tearful goodbye for Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor.
The synopsis appeared online when Blu-ray copies of the Christmas Special, titled "Twice Upon a Time," appeared on the BBC's online store.
The listing has since been taken down, but the synopsis was preserved. Here it is (via We Got This Covered):
"Two Doctors stranded in a forbidding snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. And a British army captain seemingly destined to die in the First World War but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor's story. This is the magical last chapter in the Twelfth Doctor's epic adventure. He must face his past to decide his future. And the Doctor will realize the resilience of humanity, discovering hope in his darkest frozen moment. It's the end of an era. But the Doctor's journey is only just beginning."
The synopsis confirms what most Doctor Who fans have already surmised about the First Doctor, who is being played by David Bradley in "Twice Upon a Time." In the season finale to Doctor Who Season 10, the Doctor was brought someplace snowy where he encountered the First Doctor.
This moment seems to occur during the classic Doctor Who episode "The Tenth Planet," after the First Doctor wanders off from Snowcap base into the blinding snow of Antarctica, insisting to himself that he will not change despite his regeneration being upon him, as is noted in the synopsis.
In "The Tenth Planet," the First Doctor is simply found by his companions in the TARDIS. It seems that "Twice Upon a Time" will reveal what exactly the Doctor got into while he was offscreen.
The Doctor Who Christmas Special will air on Christmas Day on the BBC and BBC America.
