Zack Snyder Releases New Short Film

When Zack Snyder departed Justice League in May audiences wondered what the director would do next. Today the answer to that question has arrived with the debut of his short film Snow Steam Iron.

Snyder told Wired that making Snow Steam Iron, which has a run time of slightly over four minutes, was a way to connect with family and friends following the death of his daughter, Autumn, in March.

"It was a cathartic experience for all of us in a weird way because when we all get together it's easier for us to make a movie than talk," Snyder says. "There was a heavy air around, as you can imagine, but this film gave us this way to be with each other that was nice."

The film also gave Snyder a way to take a step back from the world of large scale filmmaking he had been immersed in for years. Instead of relying on large budgets, crews and a ton of effects Snyder shot Snow Steam Iron on iPhone with the help of a few tools over the course of the last weekend in April at his office on the Warner Bros. lot.

However, even with the much smaller scale, the short film may just be the most "Zack Snyder" thing Snyder has ever made. It's crammed full of the filmmaker's stunning trademark visual cues, including intense closeups, slow-motion action, and desaturated colors. Those critical of Snyder's style will likely find nothing new under his dim, gritty sun – especially when it comes to women and depictions of violence.

Snow Steam Iron's debut comes on the heels of Snyder's revelation that, despite Warner Bros. previous assertion that Justice League is still Snyder's work, he is no longer involved with the film. With the upcoming superhero team film just a few months away, Snyder said it would be "unfair in a lot of ways" for him to continue to be involved.

"I'm at a place where I feel excited about it and I'm happy for my guys and I love these people that are working on it, and they're my family and I think they're doing an amazing job," Snyder said. "But I've kind of just let them do their thing."

Snow Steam Iron is available exclusively on VERO. Those wanting to view the film will have to download the app and create an account.

Justice League hits theaters on November 17th.
