Is Wonder Woman bisexual in the DC Extended Universe? That's a question that fans want to be explicitly answered in the character's upcoming sequel film.

Princess Diana, played by Gal Gadot, fell for American soldier Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, in her big screen debut in Wonder Woman. Now a petition on Change.org, filed by GLAAD New York University campus ambassador Gianna Collier-Pitts, wants to confirm that Diana wasn't a straight woman waiting for a man to come along during her time growing up on Themiscyra.

In the petition, Collier-Pitts references the long history of bisexual subtext in Wonder Woman comics that was made text by writer Greg Rucka in his Rebirth era run on the Wonder Woman comic book series.

Earlier this summer, Warner Brothers released their latest DC Comics franchise film Wonder Woman, and women young and old finally saw an image of themselves reflected in a superhero on the big screen. WB also raked in a pretty penny with a gross of over $817 million worldwide (and counting), ranking the film as the third highest grossing film in the studio's history. Needless to say, it was a success for everyone...except the bisexual community.

The likelihood of Wonder Woman being bisexual has been alluded to over the years, primarily in comics. Writer of Wonder Woman: Rebirth Greg Rucka even confirmed that "Diana has been in love and had relationships with other women", so why is it so hard to translate this for the silver screen? Wonder Woman's Diana Prince hails from Themyscira, land of the Amazons and inhabited exclusively by women. This alone should serve as reason enough to confirm her sexuality, since any close relationship she could have had prior to her romantic storyline with Steve Trevor would have had to have been with another woman. Some of you may be thinking that this specificity doesn't make a difference but for people like me who rarely see themselves reflected in media, believe me. It does.

Warner Bros. has not responded to the petition. It's worth noting that Wonder Woman did not explicitly explore the details of Diana's sexuality beyond her attraction to Trevor, so the door to reveal other relationships with women is still wide open. Gadot herself has even said that Diana being bisexual makes sense.

However, there may be concern about how this revelation would be met in certain vital international markets like China, which may ban a film over LGBT representation.

The sequel to Wonder Woman is set for release on December 13, 2019.
