Justice League is finally approaching its descent into theaters, but it seems the sequel is already in the works.

The development of Justice League has been, well, complicated to say the least. That coupled with the studio's already extensive film slate led some to believe that Warner Bros. might delay a sequel, but according to Commissioner Gordon actor J.K. Simmons that doesn't seem to be the case (via Cosmic Book News).

"Well, Commissioner Gordon wears a trench coat in every scene, so I don't know that the 'pumped up' part is going to be all that evident, especially when you're standing next to Batman! But this is the first Justice League movie - we hope - of a few. They're working on scripts for The Batman and for the next Justice League movie. It introduces my incarnation of Commissioner Gordon. I don't have a lot to do. I feel like I just dipped my toe in the water of who Commissioner Gordon will be," Simmons told Total Film.

So the script for a sequel already seems to be in the pipeline, which is good news for fans who want to see the team unite once again sooner than later. Even still, that doesn't mean the film will actually go into production within the next two years.

It all depends on the box office at the end of the day. If Justice League performs well and gets good word of mouth amongst audiences, Warner Bros. will probably clear the runway for a sequel. If not, expect it to go on ice for a bit until the studio can get its ducks in a row.

Either way, it seems Simmons will be involved in some capacity. While Simmons doesn't have a huge role in Justice League, he did immensely enjoy switching on the Bat Signal.

"That's an iconic thing, and obviously there are some very big shoes that I'm attempting to step into," Simmons said. "Some really, really wonderful actors have played that part before. It's like all of a sudden everyone in London is doing Hamlet. Now it's my turn to be Gordon."

Fans can see him play the role when Justice League hits theaters on November 17.
