Since its debut last week, fans have been analyzing every detail of the latest poster for The Last Jedi, hoping that they might discover a clue to unlocking the film's narrative. The film's writer/director, Rian Johnson, confessed to The Hollywood Reporter that, were he not the filmmaker behind the sequel, he'd likely join in on the speculation of the poster.

"Having been a Star Wars fan myself for the past 40 years, having spent most of my life on the other side of the curtain, I know the anticipation and the guesswork and theorizing is all part of the fun and game of it," Johnson shared. "So I love it. I love seeing what people are thinking, seeing what they're guessing, seeing what they're anticipating."

The biggest theory surrounding the poster is that, due to Luke Skywalker being a massive figure at the back of the poster, this teases that Luke will turn out to be a villain in the sequel. The concept originated when the trend of villains like Darth Maul, Darth Vader and Kylo Ren appearing in the background was discovered.

Mark Hamill himself even got in on the trend, taking to Twitter to tease fans about "confirming" Luke was evil.

Hamill is clearly trying to lead fans down a variety of paths as to confuse his followers, having earlier this year inadvertently revealed when the film's full trailer would debut.

In response to a fan asking him when the trailer would debut last month, Hamill told them to tune in to Monday Night Football on October 9 for "no reason in particular." The actor then deleted the tweet, claiming that he was making a joke about the teams facing off that night.

That hint ended up being true, as the full trailer debuted during halftime of the event.

We'll find out more about what's in store for Luke Skywalker when The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
