WARNING: Major Spoilers for The Walking Dead comics ahead!

With one swing of the bat, Negan swiftly became the most notorious villain in the history of The Walking Dead, both in the comic and on the TV series. With All Out War on the horizon, and Rick ready to end things once and for all, fans are wondering what will come of the villain when it's all said and done.

If the show follows the comics closely, we already know the answer to that question.

At the conclusion of the 12-issue series, Rick finally defeated Negan. He had the villain on the ground, gun pointed at his head, ready to end things forever. But, Rick realized that, even though he promised Negan that he was going to kill him when he got the chance, pulling that trigger would make him no better than his nemesis.

So, Rick instead gave Negan a fate he felt was worse than death for the villain. He said he was going to bring society back the right way and that Negan would spend his life in a prison cell.

Those who read the comics and watch the show may have noticed the seeds for this event being planted back in Season 6. Remember that cell that Morgan made in the basement of his house? Remember how, after the wolf caused all that trouble, Morgan told Rick that he wanted him to "have a better option next time?"

Thinking back to that, it seems like Negan could suffer the same fate on the series at the end of Season 8. The cell has already been built, and the parallels between Negan and Rick already exist. It would make sense for Rick to fear becoming anything like Negan, so he may spare him given the chance.

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9 pm ET on AMC.
