The mission of the USS Discovery has officially been extended.

CBS All Access has officially renewed Star Trek: Discovery for a second season.

"In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise," said Marc DeBevoise, President and Chief Operating Officer, CBS Interactive in a statement. "This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek legacy. We are extremely proud of what they've accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans the second season of this tremendous series."

Star Trek: Discovery has helped drive CBS All Access to a record high subscriber sign-up rate since it debuted in late September.

Star Trek: Discovery is currently six episodes into its 15-episode first season. The series began with a two-part pilot that felt almost like a movie. From there, the series introduced a new ship, the Discovery, and a new cast of characters.

The series so far has dealt primarily with a war between the Federation of Planets and a newly galvanized Klingon Empire. However, co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman has previously stated that the Klingon war storyline would not continue into future seasons of Star Trek: Discovery.

Set 10 years before the Captain Kirk's five-year mission in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery broke new ground by casting Sonequa Martin-Green, formerly of The Walking Dead, as lead character Michael Burnham. Martin-Green is the first woman of color to lead a Star Trek series and Michael Burnham is the first lead character in a Star Trek series who is not a Starfleet captain.

The Star Trek: Discovery cast also includes Doug Jones, Jason Isaacs, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Mary Chieffo, James Frain. The series was co-created by Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts are showrunners.

New Star Trek: Discovery episodes become available to stream Sundays at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBS All Access.
