Australian actor Chris Hemsworth is best known for playing Asgardian god of thunder Thor in Marvel Studios' shared cinematic universe, but in a new interview with the Sydney Morning Herald ahead of the release of Thor: Ragnarok, Hemsworth says he almost passed up being the one worthy enough to wield Mjolnir.

"I was crossing the road in Vancouver ... and I remember the exact moment getting a call from from my lawyer and my manager saying 'you got the offer'," Hemsworth said. "And then kind of going 'oh wow, cool. So what is it?' 'It's a superhero thing and it's a six-picture deal.'

"And we were like 'that's a lot of films to sign up for. We should pass on this.'"

It was "that voice inside you thinking it's too good to be true" that almost kept Hemsworth off Thor, but he didn't listen: instead, he took the role and has become a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the highest grossing movie franchise of all time.

Hemsworth was an unknown when he won the role for 2011's Thor, reprising the role of the lightning-slinging superhero in 2012's The Avengers, 2013's Thor: The Dark World, 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron and again briefly in the mid-credits scene of 2016's Doctor Strange. Thor's next "solo" movie, Thor: Ragnarok, is being praised as the best Thor yet and will team the golden haired god with fellow Avenger the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) with some help from half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and the Marvel Universe's newest hero, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), along the way.

Hemsworth will play Thor a seventh time in Avengers: Infinity War, hitting theaters May 2018.

Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk, his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor's quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.

Thor: Ragnarok, starring Hemsworth, Ruffalo, Hiddleston, Thompson, Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Anthony Hopkins and Cate Blanchett, opens November 3.
