While fans got to see the opening shots of the All Out War set to engulf the newest episodes of The Walking Dead on Sunday, AMC also aired a deleted scene from the Season Seven finale.

The scene occurs in the Grimes household as Rick (Andrew Lincoln) prepares to enact his plan against the Saviors, and an intense conversation plays out between Carl (Chandler Riggs) and his dad.

In the scene, Carl comments on how strange their home is without Judith there, causing Rick to point out that the child is safe with family who will protect her. He asks Carl if he knows what to do, and the young man nods.

"Give them what they want. One last time."

It's no secret that Carl hates having to live under the rule of the Saviors, but after what the events of Season Seven they have to. Or at least, they have to make it look like they're willing to go along so Rick and his allies can enact their plan.

When Rick goes to leave, he grabs his axe from the table and prompts Carl to ask his dad if he would have done it — "it," referring to "chopping his arm off."

In the first episode of Season Seven, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) nearly makes Rick chop his son's arm off but relents at the last second, playing a twisted mind game.

Michonne (Danai Gurira) interrupts, and though Carl insists it could happen again she tells him not to think about it, saying they are ready for the Saviors now.

"And there's nothing left but beating them, but winning this, making them regret they ever crossed us just before they die," Michonne says. "Don't fantasize about failing. Put everything into winning, and we'll make it real."

Michonne kisses Carl on the forehead, then tells Rick she's ready to "go get our army." Rick and Carl both smile slyly, and then the leaders of Alexandria embark on their mission.

It's a powerful scene that shows how important Michonne is in their new family dynamic. Not only is she a strong fighter but she is an inspiring leader, which is slightly different from her comics counterpart.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays on AMC.
