One Piece just proved why it cannot be beat in the manga market. Eiichiro Oda's series is arguably the most popular one which Japan has birthed, so fans cannot say they are too shocked One Piece dominated the most latest list of top-selling manga titles.
However, fans were not really expecting for One Piece to sell as many volumes as it did.
On November 2, Shueisha finally released Volume 87 of One Piece. Anime News Network just broke down the comic sales of Japan from October 30 to November 5, and One Piece managed to sell more than 1.5 million copies in under a week.
According to the stats, One Piece 87 sold 1,505,639 copies in just a couple days. My Hero Academia came in second place as its newly released Volume 16 sold 274,000 copies and Dragon Ball Super's fourth trade sold just under 175,000.
Clearly, Monkey D. Luffy and the gang are still way ahead in the lead.
There is no word on when One Piece's latest volume will make it to the U.S., but Oda is making plenty of bank of his sales so far. Volume 16 houses chapters 870-879 and covers some of the most recent events of the 'Whole Cake Island' arc.
With One Piece's popularity growing, it is only a matter of time before the massive series overtakes an American comic book icon in sales. Earlier this year, reports confirmed that One Piece has sold 430 million copies worldwide. Batman's sales are sitting around 460 million, leaving the caped crusader in danger of falling behind the Straw Hat pirates.
If you are not familiar with One Piece, then you clearly have a bit to catch up on. The series was created by Eiichiro Oda and has since become one of Japan's most iconic franchises ever created. The story follows a boy named Monkey D. Luffy as he embarks on a journey to become the King of the Pirates, but his Straw Hat Pirate family finds itself faced with some impossible challenges along the way. Luckily, the captain isn't one to simply give up on his dreams when the waves get rocky.
