Disney has just announced Rian Johnson is developing a brand-new Star Wars trilogy with Lucasfilm. No, really - this franchise may never end.

Just moments ago, Disney took fans and the press by surprise when it announced a brand-new Star Wars trilogy is being developing. Rian Johnson is being tapped to structure the next three films, and he will work with a familiar face to produce the project.

According to a new statement from the official Star Wars website, Johnson will work on the new trilogy with long-time collaborator Ram Bergman. Johnson is set to write and direct the first episode of the upcoming Star Wars installment.

"We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi," said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. "He's a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

"We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi," Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. "Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can't wait to continue with this new series of films."

Johnson has been a fan-favorite element of the latest Star Wars trilogy as the director worked on The Last Jedi. The eighth episode will debut in just over a month, and Johnson will inevitably be asked what he can say about his new project with Lucasfilm. As of right now, no details have been released on when the new trilogy will begin or what it will cover.

Fans have wondered what Lucasfilm's next steps would be for the franchise after Episode IX makes its debut. Many have speculated the Skywalker Era will come to an end with the franchise's current film slate, so Lucasfilm can go anywhere with its "blank slate" of a trilogy.
