'Supergirl' Casts Laurie Metcalf As Winn's Mom

Supergirl will have yet another family reunion in its upcoming third season.

TVLine is reporting that Laurie Metcalf will appear in an upcoming episode of the hit The CW series. She is set to appear in the fifteenth episode of Season 3, and will be playing the estranged mother of Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan).

As Supergirl fans will remember, Winn's established family history is pretty complicated. His father, Winslow Schott (Henry Czerny) operated as the villain Toyman, who went to prison after blowing up his boss' office. He escaped from prison in the episode 'Childish Things', and tried to recruit Winn into joining his violent crusade.

Metcalf is best known for her role as Jackie Harris on Roseanne. She also has appeared in The Big Bang Theory, the Toy Story franchise, and the current award contender Lady Bird.

Interestingly, news of Metcalf's casting in the series was first revealed in a Vanity Fair article. According to the piece, she explained that she guest-starred on the series "so her youngest child can meet her idol, Melissa Benoist."

Metcalf is the latest Supergirl recruit to play a main character's mother. Eight is Enough veteran Betty Buckley is set to appear on an upcoming episode of the series as Patricia Arias, the adoptive mother of Samantha Arias/Reign (Odette Annable).

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
