Mon-El returned on tonight's episode of Supergirl, but it wasn't quite the happy reunion that Kara -- and fans -- had been hoping for.

Spoilers for the Supergirl episode "Wake Up," below.

Tonight's episode saw Kara/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) reunited with Mon-El (Chris Wood) when he's discovered alive on the mysterious alien ship beneath National City. However, he's not quite the same man she sent away in a pod during the second season finale of Supergirl and, as Benoist said earlier this month, it wasn't quite the reunion anyone was expecting.

"In Episode 7, it's pretty mysterious. I think this season, we've really delved into a different tone, a different atmosphere for Kara," Benoist said. "She's really figuring out how to own her alien-ness, if you will, and in turn I think she's finding her womanhood at the same time through grief and that grief is apparent even in the coloring of the show, so I think it's a long-- it won't be the reunion you expect."

Just how unexpected was it? After some general mistrust of Mon-El after he stole an alien artifact and took it back the ship in attempt to save the others in the cryo-stasis tubes, one of the other ship passengers was broken out of her tube by Supergirl and brought back to the DEO for treatment. That passenger turned out to be Imra Ardeen/Saturn Girl Amy Jackson, and not only is she a passenger on the ship with Mon-El, it turns out that she's his wife.

You see, while it had only been seven months for Kara since she said goodbye to Mon-El, it had been seven years for him as the wormhole we saw him vanish into sent him through time and space to Earth in the 31st century. While he never forgot about Kara -- and is still wearing her necklace to prove it, not to mention Imra knows who Supergirl is -- he made the decision to move on with his life. That meant falling in love with and ultimately marrying Imra.

How that big reveal with impact future episodes of Supergirl and Kara herself remains to be seen, but from the look on Kara's face as the reality of things sank in it's just one more heartbreak this season.

Supergirl airs Monday nights at 8/7c on The CW.
