Star Wars: Andy Serkis Drew Snoke Inspiration From Hugh Hefner in 'The Last Jedi'

Supreme Leader Snoke might be one of the most mysterious new characters in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but the actor behind the First Order leader found inspiration in an unlikely source.

Andy Serkis revealed that Snoke's ornate gold robes were partially inspired by the late Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner.

When asked by Yahoo! if the character was meant to invoke images of Hef, Serkis responded enthusiastically, saying "Bingo, absolutely."

"Me and [writer-director Rian Johnson] sat down, and we said, 'Who of everyone'- there are so many different dictators you could emulate, there are so many different people out there … but the gold-lamé Hugh Hefner look was definitely the way we wanted to go."

When Yahoo!'s Kevin Polowy jokingly stated that Snoke is a playboy, Serkis smiled and confirmed, "He is."

The actor has previously spoken about Snoke's predilection to enjoy the finer things in life. Where as Emperor Palpatine preferred utility and function in his presentation, Snoke takes advantage of his status as the ruler of a powerful military.

"He's slightly oligarch. You know, he's not afraid of showing his fineries. There is a luxury that's native to him," Serkis said to Empire, also referring to the designs of his crimson-clad Praetorian Guard. "The way that his court is presented, he's very totalitarian in that way and flamboyant. He enjoys that theatricality, I think."

Don't expect to see Snoke waking up beside a few centerfold models in the new movie, however; he has a lot on his plate with this whole war-over-the-galaxy thing going on.

Serkis said that Snoke has a personal hatred for the Resistance and sees his campaign against them as a vendetta.

"The thing about Snoke is that he is extremely strong with the Force, the dark side of the Force. He's terribly powerful, of course. But he is also a very vulnerable and wounded character," Serkis said. "He has suffered and he has suffered injury. The way that his malevolence comes out is in reaction to that. His hatred of the Resistance is fueled by what's happened to him personally."
