'The Gifted': Emma Dumont Teases Polaris' Secondary Mutation

It seems that The Gifted's mistress of magnetism may be going through some changes to her powers in the near future.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, The Gifted star Emma Dumont, who plays Lorna "Polaris" Dane, teased that Lorna would undergo an evolution in her powers that sounds like something akin to the secondary mutations that affect some mutants in the Marvel Comics universe.

"I will say, coming up the next couple of episodes is also a big change for her," Dumont said. "I would say her powers have a second manifestation, and everything changes for her, from then on. So, that's very interesting."

Secondary mutation is just one more concept from Grant Morrison's early 2000s New X-Men series to make its way into The Gifted following the introduction the drug Kick and the telepathic character Esme to the series. Secondary mutation is an additional power or evolution of an existing power that hits a mutant later in their life, usually well after their powers first manifest around puberty. The most well-known secondary mutation is that of Emma Frost, who went from being strictly a telepath to also possessing the ability to transform into a solid diamond form.

But Dumont also noted how she has grown as an actress alongside her character's evolution.

"As an actress, I've learned to do a lot of stunts, and I've never played a character so similar to myself, and it's been so, so nice," Dumont said. "But I also find I fight for her so much more than any other role because every other role I don't know what it's like to be that person. So, I always look to the writers and directors like, 'Help me. Who is this? Let's figure this out together.' But for Polaris, I feel like I have very strong opinions about who she is and what she believes in."

Fans will find out if this new manifestation of Polaris' powers will arrive sooner rather than later in tonight's midseason finale of The Gifted.

The Gifted's midseason finale episode "eXploited" airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
