Though we never got to see the characters on screen together in the movies, the relationship between Princess Leia and her adopted father Bail Organa is one of the most tragic bonds to be shattered in the Star Wars film.
The new Star Wars comic book from Kieron Gillen, Salvador Larroca, Guru-eFX, and Clayton Cowles underscores the destruction of Alderaan by revealing Bail's last words to his daughter.
In issue #40 of Marvel's series, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo help Leia in a mission that brings them to Jedha. But they're met by the Empire, who are attempting to extract what remains of the Kyber crystals after the Death Star destroyed most of the planet during the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Luke is veers off mission in order to follow a direction in which the Force is pulling him, causing Leia to question his commitments. She attempts to sway him by revealing her final interaction with her father.
After Bail has tasked his daughter with securing the Death Star plans and delivering them to their allies, she believes there is someone better suited for the task.
"There's no one better. I trust you more than anyone," Bail says. "There's nothing you can't deal with."
And Leia tells Luke that she realized it wasn't just a mission briefing, but advice for her whole life moving forward.
Due to the nature of the trilogies being made, we never see Bail and Leia share a scene in the movies save for when he takes the infant to live on Alderaan in the closing moments of Revenge of the Sith.
But Leia's pain is apparent when she's forced to watch Alderaan's destruction in A New Hope. And years later, with Bail Organa playing a large role in the growing Rebellion in the prequel trilogy, that moment is made all the more tragic when we realize he was on that planet when it was blown up.
Seeing the two share the page in their final interaction is a touching, heartbreaking moment, and one that should be valued by all Star Wars fans.
