'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Reveals the Fate of Luke's Original Lightsaber

Lightsabers are one of the most important staples in the Star Wars galaxy, being the chosen weapon of skilled Jedi and Sith warriors who have appeared in every installment in the franchise.

Few weapons have had an impact in the series like Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber, which made its first canonical appearance in Episode II: Attack of the Clones. And though it was used by both Luke and Rey in subsequent films, the item might have met its end.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi below.

Rey, the current wielder of the blade, joins Kylo Ren (temporarily) to take out the Praetorian Guards after the former Ben Solo murdered his former master, Supreme Leader Snoke.

The two take out the crimson-clad warriors, though Kylo is nearly defeated in the process. Saving his life, Rey tosses Kylo the lightsaber, and he uses it to vanquish the last guard.

Rey and Kylo then come at odds, both refusing to join the other's side. Rey attempts to use the Force to pull the saber away from Kylo, who too uses his own abilities to retrieve it. The two stand on opposite sides of Snoke's burning throne room, using their powers to pull the lightsaber to their side.

But they are too evenly matched and they end up destroying the lightsaber, splitting it in two and causing an explosion right as Admiral Holdo rips through the First Order fleet by jumping through them at lightspeed, amplifying the fireworks.

Kylo is knocked out and when he wakes up, Rey is missing and the pieces of the lightsaber are gone too.

At the movie's end, Rey and Leia Organa sit among the surviving members of the Resistance in the cargo area of the Millennium Falcon, where Rey holds the broken pieces of Luke's lightsaber. She laments to Leia that Luke is gone, and is unsure how they'll be able to revive the Resistance and save the galaxy from the First Order.

Leia touches her hand and the lightsaber fragments, remarking they have everything they need.

It seems that Rey could rebuild the lightsaber, though creating ones own weapon is a rite of passage for the Jedi. Luke lost his father's lightsaber at one point as well, causing him to seek his own kyber crystal and fashion his own blade — the green lightsaber prominently featured in Return of the Jedi.

Either way, Luke's old weapon has had a long history and significant impact on the events of the Star Wars galaxy. Now it's time for a new legacy.
